Do You Know If Your Birth Mother Drank Alcohol During Pregnancy?

Often, people with Fetal Alcohol Syndrome (FAS) or Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorders (FASD) do not know if their mother drank alcohol during pregnancy. If you have some of the signs or symptoms of FAS / FASD, consider trying to determine if your mother had any of the issues below in her history.

  • Mother received treatment for alcohol and/or drug problems.
  • Mother was diagnosed with alcohol and/or drug problems.
  • Mother had a child removed from the home due to alcohol and/or drug related problems.
  • Mother died due to complications from alcohol and/or drug abuse.
  • Mother had other high risk behaviors such as DUI’s / DWI’s, or job or legal problems related to drinking alcohol.
  • Mother’s medical records indicate a presence of alcohol and/or drugs at birth.

If your birth mother had any of these factors in her history, you may have Fetal Alcohol Syndrome (FAS) or a Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder (FASD). Explore this website to learn more about the effects of drinking alcohol during pregnancy (including beer, wine, spirits, etc.).
